While many people stuck in a bad credit situation are desperate to achieve the security that comes with good credit scores but many times your vulnerability in such a situation can worsen your situation even more. Due to lack of proper knowledge, people often make a lot of mistakes when they try to repair bad credit.   1. Procrastination – The worst mistake that you can do is procrastinating. Bad credit has to be repaired immediately. There are some items that will stay on your report for 7 years, but that is no reason for you to continue with your bad credit habits.
  2. Frivolous disputes – Do not dispute all negative items on your report, irrespective of the fact whether it is correct or incorrect. Such disputes are considered as ‘frivolous’ disputes and not taken seriously. Moreover, you do not want all items to be removed from your report, thereby causing you to lose score points.
  3. Credit repair doctors – Companies that offer credit repair do not have good reputation and are unable to fulfill their promises. Do not waste your time and money by handing over your report to such companies.
  4. Closing credit cards – This is one of the worst mistakes that people make. Your credit card adds to your credit score when you use it wisely and repay your debts on time. Also, the older the credit card, the longer your credit history is.
  5. Balance transfer – This seems to be a good way to pay off debts but transferring balance will only delay the payment. In addition to the existing debt, a balance transfer fee is added and you have to pay higher amount.
  6. Cutting credit cards – When people repay their credit card debts, they promise themselves to pay only by cash and not use cards again. However, paying by cash will not add to your credit history and score. Therefore, use the cards to build a positive credit.
  7. Choosing card payments – When you have too many debts on credit cards and you are unable to repay all of them at once, you begin to prioritize but his will only lead to piling up of interest on the unpaid debts. Therefore, decide wisely and pay accounts that are current rather than those in collection accounts.
  8. Reviewing your credit report – It cannot be emphasized enough how important periodical review of credit report is. Before beginning to repair your credit, review your report so that you know where you must focus and start.
  9. Certified mail – You must always send letter by certified mail to the CRA so that you have proof of have written the letter.
  10. Filing bankruptcy – Filing bankruptcy may make you debt free but at what cost!  Don’t use this as a credit repair strategy. Bankruptcy must be filed only when all options have been exhausted and there is no way out. It remains on your credit report for 7 to 10 years and causes a major ding in your score.

When you are repairing bad credit, begin by repaying all outstanding loans and if you are unable to do so, work out a deal with the company so that your credit score begins to improve.
