Why Your Credit Report Is An Excellent Starting Point

Good things need to start somewhere - and when it comes to bettering your credit score, the best place to begin is by requesting a copy of your credit report from one of the three major reporting agencies.

These three agencies are:

  • Experian
  • Equifax
  • TransUnion

Each of these agencies is tasked with gathering your previous financial information, compiling it together, and then using an algorithm to work out your current credit score. Of course, the information that these companies have access to is limited - and therefore they will all hold different pieces of data.

This means that the credit score you receive from each of these three agencies will all be different. But if you are receiving different credit scores, how are you to act on this information?

Reviewing Your Credit Report

Obviously, the first step is to review your credit report. Often, if you are looking at your credit report for the first time, you will get confused by the array of information which is included in the 5 to 10 pages.

The best way to approach this issue is to read or download an explanation guide from the Internet. This will provide you with the information that you need to get started on decrypting the mountains of information that you receive with your report.

Taking Action On Your Credit Report

The next thing you need to do is to take action on your credit report. Once you have appropriately summed up the information that you have been provided with, and spent time digesting your overall credit score, you can create a strategic plan to boost your scores in the future.

There are a number of techniques you can use to do this. Some of them include:

  • Applying for new types of credit.
  • Paying off current debts or restructuring payments.
  • Renegotiating interest rates / payments.

Remember, the Internet is full of useful information - much of which can be used to your advantage when it comes to improving your credit score.

And as for the cost of requesting a copy of your credit report? These days, there are a number of providers on the Internet which allow you to access all three credit scores from the three major agencies, at a price which is highly competitive. A quick search will reveal many of these services.
