Get More Free Credit Reports – Find Out How?

You know that you can get your free credit report from AnnualCreditReport.com every year. But new regulations have made it mandatory for credit bureaus to provide you with more than 3 credit reports in a year if you qualify the criteria laid down. To know what these criteria are, read ahead and see if you qualify under any of these.

  1. If you are refused employment, your loan application is rejected, your landlord refuses to rent his apartment to you or if you are refused insurance, you can get a free copy of your credit report. Any action that is not in your favor makes you eligible for a free report. It also includes not being given good terms of loans or being charged high rates of interest. As per the regulations laid down under Fair credit Reporting Act, if your credit report has played any part in the adverse action, you are entitled to get a free copy of your report.

To get the report, the person who has taken adverse action must send you a notice and inform you of the agency from which the report was obtained. He letter will also inform you how to request for your free copy. You can obtain a copy every time you receive a notification.
  2. Fraud Alerts and victims – Identity theft has become an epidemic. With an increasing number of people becoming aware of identity theft and its consequences, placing fraud alerts has become a common occurrence. When you place a fraud alert, the bureau must give you a free copy so that you can review it for any fraudulent activities. Anyone, who wishes to access your report, must investigate before they can extend credit. You are entitled for one copy in case of a normal fraud alert, two copies in a year after an extended alert and one from each of the bureaus in case you are a victim of identity theft.

It is essential to keep abreast of the regulations that are laid down by the FCRA and updated from time to time. It helps you to know your rights and you can use them in times of need.
